US military helicopter & American Airlines regional jet collide at Reagan National Airport, says FAA

Washington, D.C. – A U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60, commonly known as the “Black Hawk”, collided with an American Airlines regional jet that was on approach at Reagan National Airport.

“A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time. PSA was operating Flight 5342 as American Airlines. It departed from Wichita, Kansas,” said the FAA.

“The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation.”

Officials confirmed that the regional jet was carrying 60 passengers and at least 4 crew. The Army helicopter reportedly had three crew members.

A multi-agency search & rescue operation was said to be underway. No official details regarding fatalities have been released.

According to officials, both aircraft went down into the Potomac River.

According to a White House press release, President Donald Trump was briefed about the accident. The Kansas Governor Laura Kelly was also briefed.

“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident that just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God Bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” said Trump.

“I am aware that a plane inbound from Wichita was involved in a crash at Reagan National Airport. I am actively in contact with authorities. My thoughts go out to those involved. I will share more information as it becomes available,” said Kelly.
